The purpose of this site is to disseminate historical and biographical information about the 42nd Indiana Volunteer Infantry and the men who fought in the regiment.

A Brief Introduction to the 42nd Indiana

Most of the "original" 42nd volunteers (those mustered in 1861) came from the southern and southwestern Indiana counties of Vanderburg(h), Spencer, Gibson, Daviess, Pike, and Warrick (click here for a list of the Indiana counties that each 42nd company was from and county maps). The "recruits" and the "drafted" (those mustered after 1861) also came predominately from Southern Indiana, although a decent number did come from Northern Indiana. Some of the Northern Indiana communities that these men called home included Rensselaer, Plymouth, Kendallville, Michigan City, Columbia City, and Wabash, just to name a few.
